Pay attention to why "made in China" electric vehicles "circle powder" in this African country?

2021 10/26

In Ghana, a West African country with weak transportation infrastructure, potholes and congested traffic flow are a headache for urban residents such as the capital Accra. The light and fast "moti" came into being, and the locals call it "Okada". "Moti" kids pull people, deliver goods, and walk through all corners of cities and villages.

At present, more and more electric vehicles made in China are joining this group of "motorcycle" army and gradually become a bright scenery.

Joseph kolisho, a Ghanaian, is an express brother of jumia, a local e-commerce provider in Africa. He has to complete dozens of orders under the scorching sun every day. Six months ago, the company gave him a brand-new "made in China" electric motorcycle. He felt that his work was much easier.

"This motorcycle is very small, easy to charge and better maintained than a fuel car. It makes me fall in love with made in China!" he said.

Kelishao's motorcycle was introduced by a local company called "Sun taxi" in Ghana. Since September 2019, the company has started to introduce electric vehicles, motorcycles and tricycles from China, becoming the "first batch of crabs eaters" in Ghana's local market, which has attracted a lot of local attention.

"BYD, Chery, Dongfeng..." mentioned the Chinese electric vehicle brands, and the business manager Eugene ampansa said, "we import finished cars and parts from China, both for sale and rent, in a flexible way".

Electric cars are still new to many Ghanaian consumers. When it just entered the market, many consumers worried about whether driving electric vehicles would cause electric shock or break down halfway. However, as more and more Chinese electric vehicles are put into the market, their concerns are slowly dispelled by excellent quality.

"We provide consumers with complete maintenance and after-sales service to let them know that there is no problem with the safety of electric vehicles," ambonsa said. At the same time, cooperation with e-commerce or online car Hailing companies such as jumia has further improved the visibility of Chinese electric vehicles in the market.

Emmanuel Frimpong, a technical expert of "Sun taxi" company, said that the "low economic cost" of using electric vehicles made in China is another important consideration for local consumers. In traffic congested Accra, cars must brake frequently to increase fuel consumption. Therefore, for many Ghanaian consumers with limited economic capacity, electric vehicles are undoubtedly a good choice.

Frimpong said that they are optimistic about the potential of Chinese electric vehicles in the African market, but they still stay in the manual operation stage in parts assembly and lack funds and equipment. They expect to cooperate with more Chinese enterprises to realize mechanization.

According to the data released by the government of Ghana in 2020, the country imports about 100000 cars from abroad every year, of which 90% are used cars. The resulting emissions of polluting gases pose a threat to the country's environment.

Ambonsa said that the emergence of "made in China" electric vehicles is in line with the current demand for environmental protection. "In the context of global warming, we look to China and expect China to use advanced technology to create more energy-saving and environment-friendly vehicles and bring us more surprises."
